DoubleSix Dice

Original Take on d6

Let’s talk about the company

DoubleSix Dice is not your typical merch company. The founder Matt Fleming began on Kickstarter hoping to launch a card game he had created. Looking to gain some experience on Kickstarter, he decided to start a campaign for dice, as he reports they struck him as particularly popular. Eventually he settled on one of the better ideas in dice history. Like all great ideas it began by noticing a problem: Cubes do not roll. They bounce and tumble, but rolling anecdotally creates more randomness. Eventually the Kickstarter blew up, and the idea bloomed into more ideas, including triple fours.

What’s a DoubleSix?

DoubleSix dice are dodecahedrons. Dodecahedrons are the polyhedral typically used for 12-sided dice. Generally, you’ll agree that the 12-sided die in your set rolls a ton better than the 6-sided. I could even make the argument that the 12-sided die rolls the best out of the whole set. So it would stand to reason that if a dodecahedron had the numbers 1 through 6 on it twice each, it would give you the same results as a 6-sided die, but would roll drastically better. Coincidentally, you could fit each of the numbers 1 through 4 on it 3 times. And what a fantastic improvement that is.

Place an order, and what do you get?

I personally order a set of 6 of two different colors of DoubleSix dice, and a set of 6 TripleFour dice. Matt sent me a bonus DoubleSix, just to say thanks! Giving me three different colors of DoubleSixes and one design of Triple fours.

Are they useful?

So I’ve published reviews here, where nearly the entire article focuses on what’s wrong with the product and then I finish by telling you “It’s dope! Buy it!” I could totally do that with this, because these are amazing. I use them to play Tabletop RPGs just like the rest of you. I also have used them to play Yahtzee, and Farkle, and Liar’s Dice, and every game out there that uses basic six sided dice. This is a geek item: designed and marketed with Tabletop RPGs in mind. This is an item that is useful to all of civilization, as almost everyone will play something using six sided dice at some point.

What’s not to like?

Let’s be real: there’s nothing you can complain about on these. But in the interest of having an unbiased review and remaining consistent, let’s pick nits. TripleFour dice, have unusual designs, that lead to confusion. Roll them three or four times, and the confusion will disappear entirely.

Buy them

At the time of publishing I get no commission for sales of these dice. I benefit in no way whatsoever from the success of this product. But I feel so strongly about this I’m willing to title the section “buy them.” They’re amazing. They’re good for everyone. If you’re on this website, you want these.
